November 2013

November was a great month! Not only did we get some awesome packages in the mail but we had some visitors, hung out with new friends and celebrated my birthday! Here are just a few of the highlights from this past month.

Another BIG highlight from November was a visit from my mom, but that deserves it's own post. ;) I can't believe it's already December and that Christmas is just weeks away! Lots to look forward to this coming year!

Last month was our friend Susan's 30th birthday so we wanted to go do something fun with her. There are lots of fun outdoorsy places here in our country so we decided to go check out a place called Wadi Rum.

In Arabic, wadi means valley. We drove out of the city into the desert. We were met by our Bedouin tour guide who picked us up in a pickup truck and we all loaded in the back. Judah wasn't sure what to think about all the bouncing around. We need to toughen this guy up! He's such a city kid!

After we had a tour all around the wadi we stopped at our campsite. There were about 8 tents, and I use that term loosely because they were really nice, were elevated off the ground and all had beds/cots in them.

Then we gathered with the Bedouins who did our tour along with a few other people at our same site and ate a delicious meal. It was baked chicken and vegetables and the method of cooking is called "zerb." It's where a hole is dug in the sand and the food is all wrapped up and placed underneath the sand with a fire built on top of it. It was very simple but so delicious.

Judah really had a blast climbing on the rocks and playing in the sand with his toys. We had a great time getting out of the city and really enjoyed our tour. We can't wait to go do it again sometime soon.

Trip to the Gulf

IMG_5408

Yikes! Has it really been 3 months since I posted last? I guess it feels like when all we do is study, go to class, eat and take care of kids, life is a little monotonous so I don't have much to write about. But there have a been a few fun things lately, hooray!

A month ago we went to visit some friends in a tiny Gulf island. We've been before so it was fun to see everyone again and we had a great time hanging out and getting a break from our city.

$46 Camel's milk chocolate anyone?

It's also still warm there so we got to wear our flip flops again. I think one of our favorite things was getting to eat different food! We LOVE Asian food and it's kind of hard to find where we live. You can find it but it's either not that great or super expensive, so we don't eat it that often. We also ate good Mexican food a few times and my personal favorite was breakfast at an American restaurant. HELLO sausage gravy biscuits and bacon! What a treat!

We went to see "Tree of Life." It's a 400 year old tree that's just growing out in the middle of the desert. Very strange!

After the Tree of Life we went to some man-made islands. I've seen pics of them before on Google Earth so it was pretty cool to go see some in person. From above, these islands look like fish hanging from hooks. I think Judah and Sofia enjoyed seeing the water!

Beach

Judah is in the house a lot while we're at school, so getting away is a big treat for him. He got to eat a lot of ice cream, go see a movie and play with his friends.

I was able to go get my hair cut at a nice salon. Sofia tagged along and was a big hit with all the ladies working there.

One day we went to a local cultural center where ladies go to do handicrafts. We were able to paint some plates along with some locals. I chose a verse from the Bible to write on my plate. It was John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me." It was a fun time chatting with some local ladies, drinking tea and getting crafty! Just up my alley!

It was a fun little trip to the Gulf! We can't wait to go back again soon!

8 years!

IMG_1994

As of August 20th, Thomas and I have been married 8 years! It's amazing to think that it was that long ago when we were at Carrigan Farms in Mooresville, NC (loved this place!) with all our family and friends, saying our vows to one another. In the past 8 years we've done more together than some people do in a lifetime. We've lived in 4 countries, in 3 continents, had 4 different jobs, bought a house and had 2 kids. Crazy!

Since it was our anniversary a few weeks ago we talked about it with our language teacher and she wanted to hear what an American wedding was like. I uploaded some pictures so I could show her last week. Here are some of the highlights if you weren't "fortunate" enough to be there in the 108 degree heat. That's right, hottest day of the year. And no one lets us forget it! Guess it was a foreshadowing of what our life together would be like. Hello Middle East!

So, there you have it. 8 years ago, these two became one. Our life is a big adventure and I thank God every day for how he's blessed us in this life together. I can't imagine it any other way. Here's to many more! Love you babe. Oh, and sorry I shoved cake up your nose.
